Shaping Care Together

From 4 July to 3 October 2025, the NHS Shaping Care Together Programme ran a public consultation into where A&E services should be located in Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.

An independent report looking at responses to the consultation has been published and is available on the Shaping Care Together website.

A decision-making business case (DMBC) was also developed, which takes into account the consultation findings alongside equality, clinical, financial, workforce and quality evidence.

The DMBC was shared with the joint committee made up of the integrated care boards of NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The joint committee has made the decision to relocate the children’s A&E from Ormskirk Hospital to Southport Hospital and extend it to a 24-hour service, together with the existing 24-hour adult A&E.
